Oh Look, Another Chest

When working at the hospital, I always wondered what they were looking for on a chest x-ray (CXR). Now I know. For our Radiology rotation yesterday, we stared at CXR's for two hours straight. The preceptor was excellent, and explained all the features we should be looking for in different pathologies (i.e. pneumonia, cardiomegaly, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, etc.), as well as asking many tangentially related questions on the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of these pathologies. I still have a long way to go on my hazy infiltrates, but I think I learned something. Next week, the focus is on abdominal films.

More to come, but I just don't feel like writing at the moment.

you didn’t learn imaging stuff in classes?

Carsten Says:

Yeah, we had a few radiology lectures in anatomy, a few CT’s in Neuro, and some medical imaging in Path, but that was all just looking at isolated lesions. This was the first time where a system was introduced to fully examine the totality of the films.

i tried to find infiltrate in the med term book but no luck and i’ve been wondering what it meant since i started working at SP…so..what the heck does that mean?

sonja Says:

oh yeah and i did find pleural effusion and pneumothorax so now i know what those mean:-)

papa Says:

Infiltrate means white cells and fluid collection in the alveoli(lung tissue)from pneumonia

Carsten Says:

Very good, but pneumonia is only one of the possibilities for an infiltrate. What are your differential diagnoses? :-P

sonja Says:

emphesyma? that’s got to do with the lungs hehe..ok so i’m totally off base, give me a break

Carsten Says:

Yup, that is related to the lungs, but won’t cause an infiltrate (that I know of). Someone correct me if I am wrong. :-)
