The House is on Fire

All but 6 of my residents are now dead.

Ok, so it was just a drill, but still. Two nights ago, the Disaster Preparedness/Health and Safety Committee had a fire drill in my building. Only six of the residents were able to get out in five minutes or less. There were still people streaming out 35 minutes later.

It was the first fire drill that the school had ever held, and it pointed out some issues:

1) The building where I am living has no fire alarm annunciator system. If there were a fire, we would have to knock on everyone's door (84 rooms) to let them know. And if we wanted to check every room to make sure no one was sleeping in there, we would have to carry around a board with 84 keys, since the RA's have no master.

2) First termers can't follow simple directions… When the fire drill occurred, I was across campus in a study group. On my door, I had two signs, one standard one listing duties/contact information/what to do in an emergency, and the other stating that I was out. My phone number was on there no less than 5 times, yet no one called me to let me know my building was on fire. (I also had my radio with me, yet Security didn't put a notice out over the air either…)

The purpose of the drill was to point out areas needing improvement, and to have a baseline when those improvements are made. Hopefully next time we won't have to send so many people home in body bags. (Sorry, black EMS humor.)

Anyways, midterms in 9 days… Time to get studying (not that I wasn't before), punctuated with the occasional barbecue/party (last night, tomorrow night.) :-)
