Adulthood Sucks

Sorry for not posting in a few days, but I have been busy. Just a couple of quick posts to rest the minds at ease of those already emailing me to see if I am still alive. :-) I've been busy with:

  • Medical school - studying and all…
  • RA stuff - mostly letting maintenance into student rooms and supervising while they do their repairs
  • Registering for next term
  • Getting loans/financial aid squared away for next term
  • Deciding if I wanted to do the RA thing Terms 5 and 6 in St. Vincent. I decided that I wanted to take a break and live off-campus with some friends, so now that has entailed:
    • Looking at the St. Vincent off-campus housing lists/photos in the housing office
    • Calling all the landlords
    • Planning a trip to St. Vincent to view apartments/put down a deposit/sign a lease. (Yes, you really have to do it 2 terms in advance, otherwise the good places are gone.) This entailed:
      • Trying to find flights that wouldn't require an overnight stay. We had originally planned to stay the weekend and do some scuba diving, but when the costs creeped upwards of $700, that was scratched, since we can dive when we are there for four months anyways.
      • Booking a rental car.

Responsibility and "acting like an adult" takes so much time and effort. Why is it again that we "young adults" can't wait for this stage in our lives? Everything is all set now, and we are headed to SVD on Sunday from 7 AM - 7PM. Unfortunately, this counts as my weekend "off the island." A whole 12 hours, woo hoo! :???:

What’s more dragging is having a family of your own. You spent less time with yourself, more with your kids. But my kids make me happy. All of us do wish to go back to the time we only have ourselves to worry about.

Carsten Says:

Thankfully, that’s still a while off… I am not the biggest fan of kids right now :-)

I never looked forward to being an adult! Glad you´re alive, I almost emailed to ask too, but figured mom and pap probably did and didn´t want to be considered a pseudo-parents  Sounds like a good decision to not RA it, since it seems to take up a lot of time for worthless things. Good luck finding a nice place - how many others will you be living with?

Carsten Says:

Right now we’re looking at a 3-bedroom (so 2 others), but it is in an area where lots of other students are living, so lots of neighbors.

Papa and Mama Says:

Glad to hear from you again! We were already worried, as the e-mail showed. Wo8ld have called already but we were in Sweden. Tonight we decided to head back to Germany early because we don’t like paying the prices here for what we get. It really isn’t that much different culturally than northern Germany but a öot mpre expensive. They have to support that social economy. We decided to take in a few days of Berlin. There’s a lot there that we haven’t seen and the food is better!

Carsten Says:

Try Grenada… Today I bought a half gallon of milk that expires in 3 days for $4. I really should have waited until the next shipment came in, but hey, I was out. :???:

sonja Says:

It´s all about where the food is better for you two isn´t it? Seems to be one of the deciding factors in if you like a country or not

Carsten Says:

Well, you gotta eat, right? Which reminds me: time for breakfast :-)

Papa and Mama Says:

BTW–smart decision to take time for “you” You’ll be able to work and have lots of responsibilities later. In the long run, the RA money doesn’t make that much of a difference.

Carsten Says:

Yeah, though it would have saved me ~$18,000 (interest included).
