Tacky

I happened upon my school's website, which displayed this new image:

True Blue Campus -- Click to Enlarge

Considering that this is the first image many prospective students will see of the campus, maybe leaving the end of the airport runway in the top of the image is a bit tacky? Fortunately, Point Salines International Airport is no ORD [Chicago O'Hare], so we only get building-shaking pleasure of a large jet taking off about once a day. Personally, I kind of like having the airport in such close proximity - it makes my job as an RA easier. Instead of waiting around the airport for hours on end for new students (who we are required to pick-up) to arrive on delayed flights, we know exactly when the plane is landing. :-)

Thats really funny. I think it looks nice. I have a question. How many students are in th medschool? It looks like a big campus. Also, is the teaching hospital in view too?
Ciao C.

Thanks. :-) As to your questions:

1) The med school is averaging around 300-350 students per class, and there are 2 classes per year, so around 600-700 students/year. As far as how many students occupy the campus, sorry can’t estimate, as I don’t know how many students there are in the Vet School, Graduate Studies or Arts and Sciences programs.

2) The General Hospital is in the capital, about 25-30 minutes away. It’s really not a teaching hospital, with the exception of observing surgeries or something. Terms 1-4 in Grenada are mostly hitting-the-books basics sciences with occasional courses like “Clinical Skills” interspersed. We spend Terms 5 and 6 at Kingstown Medical College in St. Vincent (another Caribbean island slightly to the north), and that’s where we start doing hospital time at the teaching hospital in preparation for 3rd and 4th year rotations in US hospitals.

Whoa, thats a big class. I bet there are a bunch of smart cookies with that many people. I hope you are not stressing out.
Well, as you and i become doctors it will be interesting to see how our medical lives are influenced based on what we learn the first 2 years compared the the second 2 years.
Have a good summer, although you don’t deserve it seeing that you can dive each weekend!

Carsten Says:

Yeah there are a few people with Master’s/Doctorates… They do a pretty good job with small group discussions that the class doesn’t feel that big. I can’t wait to get out of this basics sciences bs (important foundation, I know), and into the clinical stuff.

Have a good summer as well — mine’s only going to be 2 weeks if I accept employment as an RA again… :???:

Wow…that’s reeeeeaaaalllly close.

Good place for…um…Marines to land. ;-)

Jeremy Says:

Upon further review it looks like it was a group of Rangers that actually evacuated the med school.

But it was a joint mission.

Carsten Says:

At that point, this campus didn’t exist — it was located in Grand Anse, about 10 minutes away. And I don’t know if this runway existed then either — it was the runway that the Reagan administration was contesting that the Communists were going to use for a military base.

Jeremy Says:

Interesting…very very interesting…
