Drunk on Thursday

Last night's ED shift was busy… around a 4 hour line to see the doctor for Class III patients (urgent, but not emergent.) Nothing too memorable though. After my 12 hour shift as a tech, they offered me an 8 hour shift as an information associate (unit clerk. ) I was thinking about it, but then someone said something about some Dept of Labor regulation about not working over 16 hours straight. Which I guess was fine, but what about EMS personnel that work 72 hours straight? Turns out I probably should have taken them up on their offer, since I ended up working that late anyways for free. I was up watching TV at 4am (I have been working evenings/nights so my schedule is a bit screwed up), when the ambulance was toned out all-call (duty crews on calls) for a 1-D Motor Vehicle Accident, male unconscious. Evidently it was first dispatched to the fire department for wires down — the bystander saw the telephone wires down, but missed the smashed-up car that cracked the telephone pole into 3 pieces. 22 year old male, intoxicated, mostly with facial lacerations. Also altered mental status, either from the alcohol or a closed head injury. He was taken down to the trauma center as a precaution. He also claimed not the be the driver… even though the fire department cut him out of the driver's seat. Maybe he's done this whole DWI thing before?
