EMS in Grenada

Well I realize that Grenada does not have some of the resources that the US has, but in the area of emergency services, I did not realize they were so lacking. First, an anecdote. A friend of a friend's grandmother called 911 for chest pain r/o mi. Took the ambulance two hours to arrive, because there were no drivers available. Not even any skilled medical care, 2 hours for basically a taxi. And then tonight, I was watching the local Grenadian Broadcasting Network news, when they reported that one of the red mini-vans that act as the local mass-transit system rolled-over twice in a rural part in the north of the island. Initial reports indicated that 4 people were dead, 3 injured and one person still trapped in the wreckage. They had a camera up there, and the van was pretty messed up… crumple zones crumpled, on its roof with intrusion, blood everywhere, and a woman still trapped inside. Now this was 2 and a half hours after the reported incident. There were no EMS personnel around, not even any firefighters working on extrication. Nobody around, except for the camera man. 2 and a half hour+ response time on a multi-casualty MVA? That just makes me want to help out and volunteer. The only problem is that I get addicted to EMS and will spend all my time on rigs, rather than studying for med school. Not that they would allow me anyways, but still thinking about volunteering for the ambulance. But must stay strong and resist…..
