My Weekend

Posted By Carsten On 22nd August 2004 @ 22:46 In Medical School, Life in Grenada | 6 Comments

See, I don't post for a day or two, and people are already asking where I am… Well, I do need to study sometime… :???:

Anyways, here is a recap of my weekend:

Friday… Don't really remember it much… too long ago. Oh yeah, went to classes, picked up a stand-up fan for my living room, and taught CPR classes to the freshmen. I got the AED (aka Automatic External Defibrillator - ok that thing that they use on ER to shock people) station, which I figured would be the least work. (Really, they are designed so an idiot can work them without any training.) Well, evidently someone stole the good AED trainer, so I was left with this really old one (those in the field think LP10 era). It had pads, but not any cables to connect the pads to the machine. Hence, all the machine would say is "Connect electrodes," and woudn't move on to the next steps. Not only is it annoying to hear that every 10 seconds, it is completely useless as a training tool. Well, the school just bought AED's and put them on the outside of various buildings. Now these machines cost thousands of dollars, so in the US they are in locked boxes that you have to break to open (and sometimes automatically dispatch EMS if opened.) Not in Grenada — they are in plain wooden boxes with plexiglas on the front which you can just slide open easily. So we ended up taking the AED from the front of the building we were in and using that instead :-)
After that, I was supposed to go to a beach party with a bonfire, but rain/lightning nixed that.

Saturday: A mix of teaching CPR classes (did I mention I was getting a whole $4/hr to teach?) and random studying. More rain.

Sunday: Woke up late (10 am — nothing like this summer where late meant 2-3pm– aah the days.) Anyways, now that I have a microwave I could finally defrost some of the things in my freezer. Like bagels… and bacon. So I ended up making myself one of my favorite breakfasts — a bagel melt (bacon/egg/cheese on bagel.) It was actually really good.. even better than Friendly's… (who has discontinued it on their menu… grrr). After that, some more CPR (mostly getting paid 4 hours for cleaning up for 20 min) Today was the Activities Fair… went out to represent the Emergency Medicine Club (of which I am President.) We got a bunch of new members, and more importantly a couple thousand dollars in member dues… (all of which is in untraceable cash)

Anyway, gotta head home… 6:55 am comes early.
