Ok, I think I have settled on a compromise regarding comments. I was going to require all users to register to post comments, but this would turn people off commenting. What happens now is that your first comment is held for moderation. Once it is approved, it will show up, and all your future comments will be "white-listed," i.e. will show up automatically, without moderation. In this way, I think I strike a balance between pain-in-the-ass-ness and spam protection.

Note: Your email address will never show up on the blog, nor will it ever go to any third parties, so feel free to use your real one when posting comments — otherwise you will need to wait to have your comments moderated.
